H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art Presents: ‘Visions Behind the Veil’

January 15, All Day
H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art
Repeats weekly (to Jan 19)

Join us for the third curated event showcasing the works of Carthage’s Sam and Berry Shoen Collection of Soviet Art from Friday, Dec. 6 through Sunday, Dec. 8 and from Wednesday, Jan. 8 through Sunday, Jan. 19, in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art.

The gallery is closed Monday, Dec. 9 through Tuesday, Jan. 7.

“Visions Behind the Veil: Soviet Portraiture and Cultural Resilience” invites viewers on a compelling journey into Soviet portraiture, where the veils of political ideology often obscured deeper layers of human experience. The exhibition reveals the resilience of Soviet artists in navigating the constraints of state censorship while striving to capture the essence of their subjects. From stoic workers and party officials to artists, performers, and poets, each portrait becomes a window into the complexities of life under the Soviet regime. The exhibition celebrates artistic achievements through intimate portrayals while highlighting the enduring human spirit beyond political confines.

Join us for the opening reception and symposium in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art.

  • Opening Reception: 3:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16
  • Symposium: Tuesday, Jan. 14-Thursday, Jan. 16

The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Extended hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays. All art exhibits are free and open to the public.
